Columbus Public Dock Lottery - April 26, 2012 - Full information |

Rich Zweifel (DOW) reports on the stocking
of Saugeye at Hoover, "Hoover
was stocked with 284,000 saugeye fingerlings on 5/23/11. Fish averages
just over an inch in length (27mm) and were 2,100 to the pound."
He went on as we asked if numbers were lower than past years due to poor
hatch rate or poor environment at Hoover for Saugeye, "Hoover
received ~100 saugeye fingerlings per acre, which is our statewide “base
rate”. The stocking rates for our reservoirs are determined based on
the water retention rates. Reservoirs like Hoover that have high water
retention are maintained with the base stocking rate. It’s not that
Hoover is a poor environment for saugeye, it’s quite the opposite. We
have learned that it doesn’t take as many saugeye to maintain the
fisheries at high-retention locations, like Hoover."

From Chad Karg (Cols. R&P) - "Columbus Recreation and Parks
encourages marina and stake customers to exchange names and phone
numbers with their neighboring boaters. Having another set of eyes on
your boat could aid in protecting your property. As always if you see
something out of the ordinary contact the Watershed Rangers and if you
witness a crime do not hesitate to contact police."

INCIDENT REPORT FROM WSM RANGERS - 10/5/11
|
|
From Lorraine Winters, WSM:
“Watershed
Management is asking all shoreline anglers for their cooperation in
efforts to protect the shoreline restoration projects
along Hoover Reservoir. Hoover
Reservoir
is a valuable drinking water source and
protecting
the
water quality is of upmost importance.
Over the course of the last year many improvements were made along the
shorelines of Hoover
including the installation of bioswales,
rain gardens and permeable pavement. This green infrastructure will
help capture and
improve the quality of water entering
the reservoir.
Correcting and
preventing shoreline erosion was
another major focus of the
projects.
Engineered solutions included
the addition of
flexible, permeable
concrete
armor
called
“A-Jacks”, and
the
planting of willow stakes
and other vegetation with
root systems that will grow and
protect
the banks from
erosion.
The newly-installed plant
material has been
surrounded with temporary fencing to
protect the young plants from being eaten by waterfowl or trampled by
foot traffic.
Unfortunately, in the
last few weeks,
some shoreline anglers
at Redbank removed whole
sections of fence in order to access a better fishing spot. The fence
has been repaired
and new signage has been posted to
prevent future incidents of trespass. Watershed
Management has asked for
assistance from local law enforcement should further incidents of
trespassing occur.
Protecting water quality and
reservoir
shorelines
ultimately supports
an improved habitat for
the
fish and wildlife we
all
enjoy.
Thank you and please contact a
Watershed Ranger to learn more about the shoreline
improvements or to report issues of concern.”

From John Carter, WSM, we received the
following notice. "Before
launching a vessel with a motor in excess of 10 horsepower on Hoover
Reservoir, which is limited to 10 HP and 10 MPH, the motor must be
tilted up and remain tilted while on the reservoir. Motors in excess
of 10 HP may remain in a non-tilt position provided the prop is removed
prior to launch and remains so while on the waterway. This rule is per
City of Columbus Ordinance 921.01 and is subject to enforcement by any
officer authorized per state code including state watercraft officers.
For questions, please contact the Columbus Department of Public
Utilities Watershed Management Office at (614) 645-1721 or e-mail watershed@columbus.gov."

From
Jerry Paul IMPORTANT new information about
gasoline for our boats:
"On Jan. 21, 2011, the EPA granted a
waiver to allow the ethanol blend in certain automobile, SUV and pick
up truck engines to increase from 10 percent to 15 percent. This
waiver from E10 does not apply for usage in boats, The Marine
Association MRAA does not recommend e15. Complete engine failure could
occur. Boaters must use only E10 blended or unblended fuel in
their engines." We thank Jerry for this information and strongly
recommend the addition of a product like the new "Sta-Bil Marine" each
time we add gasoline to our tanks to counteract the side effects
of the ethanol. For more information about the effects of ethanol on
our motors, read the following:

USGS Hoover Data. He reports, " The data sonde is generally
parked at approximately 2 m when not doing profiles. This is the
reported surface temperature (at 1 hour intervals). Also starting
at midnight, it is currently set to do profiles every 4 hours.
These currently range down to 15 m." You'll note when you go the
site, you can select readings of various factors from a period up to 120
days and can call up either a chart or a table. |
